It was not enough for
me to simply ‘fix’ the problem with coping
strategies, I was eager to find out what was making my children who are happy,
warm and intelligent have such unexpected difficulties at school.
I was not surprised to realise that it is their very imaginative and active minds
that cause them such difficulties at school. It is simply not enough for them
to be told that 6 x 8 = 48; indeed they have to work it out every time they are
asked it!
They find it hard to slow down enough for the methodical process of
reading and writing, and the ‘phonic’ approach slows them still further
when ‘word recognition’ would suit them much better.

Visual learners have to
understand something to absorb it. Learning something ‘by heart’ may
help them for a couple of days, but they will not retain this information
unless they understand
it. Yet this is their great gift.

These are the children who will go on to become great
designers, entrepreneurs and artists. Their imaginations will one day
be the making of them; the difficulty we as parents face is preserving
their self-confidence in their years at school.
